BIOCLUB ACTIVITIES- 2018-19

               The Bioclub came into force on 28 th January 2016. We are honoured to be in thefourth batch of Bioclub. We joined this club on 24 th September 2016.

At the beginning of this academic year 2018-2019, on 24 th July 2018, we started the activities by selecting the office barriers who are successfully handling their responsibilities. Fresher’s day was conducted by the joint venture of BSc III & V Sem on 10 th August 2018 where we heartily welcomed our juniors. At the same time we congratulated Dr. Vijayalaxmi madam who is the first lady principal of our college. The fresher’s day was conducted under the guidance of our principal Dr. Vijayalaxmi madam, Dr. Renukadevi madam, HOD Of Zoology department,
Bharati madam, HOD of Botany department, Vidya madam, lecturer of Zoology department.
We also welcomed newly joined teachers Dr. Shivaram Shastri sir, Neelakant sir, Niranjan sir and Pradnya madam to our department. Bioclub organized a workshop for us on 3 rd September 2018. Dr. Prakash Mesta, project
scientist, Ms.Deepti, & Ms.Sharanya, research scholars were the resource persons from IISC, Field Station Kumta.
Dr. Prakash Mesta delivered a lecture on ‘Documenting the land use & land cover dynamics in village area’ (methods & examples). Ms. Deepti & Ms. Sharanya gave their presentation on coastal ecosystem, coastal diversity & services. In their presentation they focused on
 Treat to marine ecosystem
 Role of plants in ecosystem services
 Marine endemism
 Coastal mangrove diversity
The program was found to be very useful for us as we actively participated in interactions
& activities.
Bioclub organized one more workshop on the topic ‘Diversity & Importance of Lichens in the Western Ghats’ on 26 th October 2018.Prof. Bharati Shanbhag was the co-ordinator of the workshop. Resource persons for this workshop were Dr. Sanjeeva Nayaka, Dr. Siljo Joseph & Dr. Sumesh Dudani from CSIR- National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow. Dr.Sanjeev Nayaka gave detailed account of collection & preservation
of lichens. Dr. Siljo Joseph explained the types & ways to identify lichens. Then Dr.Sumesh Dudani explained the distribution & uses of lichens. They also explained different types of lichens found in Western Ghats. They displayed different types of lichens collected by them.

Ecell IIT Kharagpur Event in collaboration with Bioclub and Dr. M. P. Karki Institute of Excellence and Research organized two days workshop and entry to National Level Competition at IIT Kharagpur for life science students on 2 nd &3 rd February 2019 on the topic ‘Coherence of plants with animals ‘ Dr. Renukadevi Golikatte was the coordinator for the workshop. Students from Dr. A. V. Baliga College of Arts and Science, Kumta, M. M. Arts and Science College, Sirsi, Govt. Arts & Science College, Karwar, M.G.C. and G.H.D. Science College, Siddapur, DES’s Bangurnagar Degree College, Dandeli, R.N.S First Grade College, Murdeshwar and SDM Degree College, Honnavar have participated in the workshop. Dr. Shailaja Dwivedi, Senior Scientist, IPCA Laboratories Pvt Limited, Mumbai, Dr. Masood Siddique, Principal & Dr.Shakeeb, Professor from Royal Institute of Pharmaceutical & Research Nasik, Mumbai were the resource persons. Each session was very much informative & interactive. All the participants were actively involved in the practicals like extraction of plant products,
identification of secondary metabolites, summary writing, quiz competition, oral presentation & video watching (drug testing in animals) etc. Top 5 students were selected for final round of competition which will be held at IIT Kharagpur. Among them two are from SDM Degree College, Honnavar, one from M. M. Arts & Science College, Sirsi and two from Govt. Arts & Science College, Karwar. All these events made the workshop successful.
